I try my best to reply to all questions asked and when I do reply with my answers, quite a few people get back to me and say something along the lines of,

wow that program is a little more than what I can afford or willing to pay. Is there anything cheaper?

So I have decided to pick out my own top free audio recording software programs that might suit those peoples needs. Only three audio recording programs were selected for this blog post and you may be curious why these three programs make the cut on my recommended list. The reason why I chose these three free software recording programs is because they’re rich in audio editing features and do the basics for any home recording artist / enthusiast, plus they’re cross platform compatible. Meaning they’re able to run on both Windows and Mac, some even Linux. The other big reason would be because some of the (DAW’s) have the option to run on 32bit or 64bit operating systems. There are many more free audio recording software programs out there, but in my opinion these are currently the top dog for free (DAW’s)

PreSonus Studio One Free

My number one pick hands down for a free music recording program or (DAW) would be PreSonus Studio One Free.

PreSonus Studio One Free has so many great features that it would take forever to list them all, but some of the features include:

beautiful user interface

drag and drop

unlimited audio and midi tracks

unlimited track FX

real-time audio timestretching and resampling

virtual instrument

it just works great and very solid

etc…

No technical support is provided for Studio One Free, but they have a very helpful and active forum where you can get a lot of questions answered and learn a lot of tips and tricks.

Another great reason why you should pick PreSonus Studio One is because it really is a full on professional Digital Audio Workstation that sounds great and in my opinion is way ahead of the curve compared to most other professional DAW’s. If you ever plan to step your recording engineer game up from the Free version it won’t be a problem for you because you would already be familiar with the programs user interface and capabilities.

As you can see by the picture above, you can choose Window 32bit, 64bit or Mac. Reaper focuses on stability and doesn’t spend money on marketing or piracy locks, it just straight up works. So this is how it works, you download and install it. For the next 60 days you get to Evaluate Reaper with no limitations and after 60 days some annoying pop up appears at the beginning of the application launch asking you to pay for a license. Basically Reaper runs on the honour system and you are NOT limited to what you can do after the 60 day evaluation period. A lot of people use it for years and never pay for a license but, I recommend if you enjoy using the software then please help those financially who develop the product you use so they can keep coming out with new updates.

Reaper also has a forum where you can get tips, tricks and you questions answered.

Some of the features are:

drag and drop

cut, paste, move, layer audio freely

full automation recording and playback

customization

manage tempo and time signature

etc…

Reaper has great OS 32bit and 64bit support for both Windows and Mac.

Download Reaper

Audacity

This is my third pick out of three I selected.

Audacity is a very basic and simple to use audio recording software program. Audacity’s user interface isn’t as pretty as PreSonus Studio One’s or Reaper’s but it can defiantly do the job, especially on older computers with single core cpu processors or on computers that don’t have the up to date video cards like most have today.

Some of the features are:

record via usb, mic/line in

multi-track recording

Unlimited sequential Undo (and Redo)

Timer Record and Sound Activated Recording features

Supports 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit

etc…

Click Here for a list of all the features

Here is the help page for tips, tricks and tutorials

This program can be used with the three main operating systems out there.
